The Brass Band
The earliest reference to the existence of a district brass band in St Marys
was in July 1882 when mention was made by the Nepean Times of the attendance
of the South Creek Brass Band (St Marys being known at that time as South
Creek) at a local celebration known as the Annual Bullock Roast. The present
St Marys District Band Club Brass Band can rest with the knowledge that its
lineage can be traced back for well over 100 years.
The Band has been
under the leadership of Ken Bradley since January 1985
and the current membership in both senior and junior
bands is in excess of 60 players.
Both the senior and junior bands are regular competitors
at state and national competition. The junior band has
won national and state titles at junior B-grade level,
as well as state and regional titles at senior D-grade
level. The senior band has attended every national championship
in Australia since 1987 and the national championships
of New Zealand in 1988. The senior band has NSW, Australian
and New Zealand national B-grade titles to its credit
before promotion to A-grade in late 1988. The band was
runner-up at the state A-grade championship on three
occasions, and in 1993 was runner-up at the Australian
Nationals and winner of the National Aggregate trophy.
St Marys Band is the NSW State A-grade champion for
1999. Since 1989, St Marys Band has earned a reputation
as one of the best street-marching bands in the country,
gaining major placings at these events for several successful
years.
St Marys Band has had significant input into the Ern
Keller events for many years. There has been representation
from past and present players and conductors in the
memorial solo trophy on numerous occasions. The band
has also won "Band of the Year" on three occasions
since its inception in 1990.
New members are always welcome to join the band and
rehearsals are held Monday night at the Band Club from
8:00 pm to 10:00 pm (senior band) and Tuesday night
from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm (junior band). For further rehearsal
or performance details, or to book the band for an engagement,
