Brass

St Marys Band Club Brass Band resides and rehearses in St Marys, NSW as part of the St Marys Band Club.

The Band Club has a vibrant history which dates back to the formation of the St Marys' District Band in 1882, and the donation of a property and hall in 1923 by Joe Armstein, a local businessman.

The real genesis of the club extends to 1952, when Brian King and Ern Keller met together to discuss reforming the band and making a club. The late Ern Keller is well known to people around the St Marys district, and a number of brass band competitions have been held in his honour, including the annual Ern Keller Memorial Competition. Brian King is also a notable figure in St Marys history. He was the longest serving mayor of Penrith. No doubt with Ern Keller's love of band music and Brian King's love of a beer the two would have made an admirable start to a club.

The members of this reformed band reclaimed their hall and set out to repair the run-down state it had been reduced to. With the help of local business people who donated goods and services to get the hall into a decent state, the St Marys District Band Club was revived and granted a license in 1956.
St Mary’s Band Club is now recognised in Australasia as the ‘home of brass bands’ and provides patronage to educational and artistic band musicianship events including regular National Australia Brass workshops and also the ‘Keller International Brass Musician of the Year’ festival – the most prestigious band musicianship solo competition in the banding calendar.

SMBC Brass competes at an A grade level in State and National competition levels, gives public concerts and is available for hire. Contact Us to find out how!

Since 2009 SMBC Brass has been fortunate enough to experience the musical patronage of Professor David King. Following the inaugral success of the Australasian Band Conductors (ABC) Scholarship Program in 2010, which saw Matthew van Emmerik leading the band to success as both the Keller Band of the Year and winner of the City of Penrith Eisteddfods, Professor King again offers through this program a wealth of education by way of conducting tuition and performance workshops to the 2011 and 2012 ABC Scholar Benjamin Crocker.

The Keller band is St Marys' second brass band created for the purpose of improving music playing skills at any age, and promoting musical enjoyment in the community. Teaching and Coaching is given to beginners and instruments may be provided. The Keller Band is also available for hire, get in touch with us for further information.
